Designed to meet the energy needs of the Oasis Reservoir Facility while maximizing long-term savings for the City of Tucson, the solar system was engineered with a critical operational requirement: solar energy exported to the local utility grid could not exceed 250 kW at any given time. Without mitigation, excess generation during periods of low facility demand could have required costly utility infrastructure upgrades or a reduction in system size, both of which would have diminished the project’s economic value.
To address this challenge, SOLON Corp. implemented a customized controller and monitoring program that dynamically limits system export to the grid. When real-time solar production minus facility load approaches the 250 kW threshold, the controller signals the inverters to reduce output accordingly. This solution eliminated the need for expensive transfer-trip equipment while preserving system capacity and maximizing savings for the city.
