SAN JOSÉ, Calif., September 28, 2022 — Boviet Solar Technology Co. Ltd. (“Boviet Solar” or “the Company”), a leading solar energy technology company specializing in advanced monocrystalline PV cells and premium Gamma Series™ Monofacial and Vega Series™ Bifacial PV modules, proudly announces its participation in a Solar Builder Magazine Project of the Year Award–nominated project — the Mount Olive Superfund Solar Farm in Mount Olive, New Jersey — recognized by Solar Builder Magazine for its innovative brownfield redevelopment, environmental remediation impact, and long-term economic benefits for the local community.
The project demonstrates how utility-scale solar can transform formerly unusable land into productive clean-energy infrastructure while delivering meaningful fiscal and social value to municipalities.
Project Overview
Mount Olive Superfund Solar Farm
Location: Mount Olive, New Jersey
System Size: 25.6 MW
Project Partners
The Mount Olive Superfund Solar Farm is the largest solar array ever developed on a landfill property in the United States. The site was originally abandoned in the early 1980s when the former owner declared bankruptcy without properly closing the landfill, resulting in environmental contamination that placed the property among the first locations added to the U.S. EPA National Priorities List of Superfund sites in 1982.
Through a unique public-private partnership and redevelopment structure, CEP Renewables acquired long-held tax liens from the Township of Mount Olive and foreclosed on the property, enabling a comprehensive cleanup and redevelopment of the site. The project has allowed the township to recoup nearly $2.3 million in past-due taxes, while creating a replicable model for brownfield and landfill solar redevelopment across New Jersey and beyond.
Construction of the facility employed hundreds of union workers, delivering immediate economic benefits during development. Now operational, the solar farm generates ongoing tax revenue that helps subsidize the township’s annual budget, marking the first time the property has contributed tax revenue in nearly 40 years.
“This Project of the Year nomination highlights how solar energy can play a powerful role in environmental restoration and economic revitalization,” said Songul Atacan, Head of Global Brand and Marketing at Boviet Solar. “The Mount Olive Superfund Solar Farm demonstrates what’s possible when innovative redevelopment, public-private collaboration, and reliable solar technology come together. At Boviet Solar, we are proud to support projects that turn environmental liabilities into long-term community assets.”
Boviet Solar’s PV modules were selected for their performance, durability, and long-term reliability, supporting consistent energy production in a complex landfill-redevelopment environment. The Solar Builder Project of the Year Award nomination underscores how thoughtful project execution, strong partnerships, and proven solar technology can deliver transformative environmental, economic, and social outcomes.
